Becoming a Mentor Foster Parent

All children deserve to lead full, joyful lives and to have caring people supporting them as they grow. Mentor Maryland gives children more than just a safe home. We help children who have had a difficult start in life overcome the challenges they face.

Our foster parents, who we call Mentors, come from all walks of life and backgrounds, but they have one thing in common. They’re caring people who want to help children live their best life.

Basic Requirements Include:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Must have an extra bedroom
  • Must complete a background check

Foster parents are independent contractors and not employees of Mentor Maryland or Sevita.

Therapeutic Foster Care

In Mentor Maryland’s Therapeutic Foster Care program, children live with loving foster parents who provide the care and stability they need to heal and grow. With the support of their foster parents, children build life skills to overcome emotional, behavioral, and other challenges.

Depending on each child’s needs, supports include:

  • Individual and family therapy
  • Trauma treatment
  • Skill building
  • Case management
  • Community and family activities

Medically Fragile Foster Care

In our Medically Fragile Foster Care program, we support children from birth to age 21 who require medical supports and interventions in order to thrive. Children get comprehensive loving care in family homes with special foster parents committed to helping them live well.

Children in our program receive:

  • A loving home with Mentor foster parents whose schedules allow for intense care and supervision
  • Direct medical care required by the child’s health condition
  • Specially trained social workers who coordinate and monitor the child’s treatment plan
  • Nursing case management and 24/7 on-call support

Teens in Transition

In our Teens in Transition Therapeutic Foster Care program, we help young people prepare for independence through strength-based supports tailored to each person’s needs. Individuals aged 15 to 20 live with a Mentor foster family in a nurturing setting with structure and supervision. Teens receive career training and in-person or virtual skill building in vocational skills, health and mental health, and financial literacy.

Independent Living Services

Mentor Maryland’s Independent Living program helps youth build the skills they need to live independently. We provide caring support to help them find and keep a job, reach educational goals, and address behavioral and emotional challenges. Unlike traditional foster care, youth in this program live in an apartment with a roommate instead of with a foster family. They go to school or work and have access to supports to help them prepare for adulthood.

Family Centered Treatment®

Family Centered Treatment (FCT) is an evidence-based family preservation model of home-based treatment designed to support and help keep the family together. Our caring therapists help the family find simple, practical, and common-sense solutions for to the challenges they are having living and working well together in the home. The goals of Family Centered Treatment are:

  • Keep families together or help create stable family placements
  • Address the root causes of issues families may be having
  • Reduce harmful behaviors that affect family relationships
  • Help the family find balance emotionally and in daily living
  • Identify and build on the family’s strengths to support long-term stability and change
