“As an empty-nester, I missed the nurturing part of having children,” said Shunda. “I have so much love and time to give and wanted to show love to those who need it most.”
Shunda felt led not just to support children in the community, but to support some of the most vulnerable youth in care: new parents. While many would be intimidated to support young women and their babies, Shunda knew she could make a difference in their lives.
“Who better to teach another single parent than a single parent?” asked Shunda. “I feel that I can relate to who they are and what they will be going through at some point. I’ve been there, done that, so why not share my experiences?”
Finding her support system
While Shunda is a single foster parent to mothers and infants, none of them are ever alone. Our expert team is there for our Mentors every step of the way. Shunda has felt empowered by the treatment team she works with to best serve those in her care.
“The Program Services Coordinator is simply amazing and returns all calls and addresses all concerns in a timely manner,” said Shunda. “The Director and the therapist are also readily available when I have questions or concerns. Everyone is friendly and professional at all times.”
With the Sevita team by her side and her ability to connect to young mothers with her shared experiences, Shunda’s empty nest is once again full of love.
“If you have any extra love to give, please know that there are so many children that need it, are looking for it, and would be glad to have it,” said Shunda. “For me, it’s what I get from being able to make a difference and seeing what I’ve taught be implemented into a part of a child’s daily life.”
