Helping People of All Abilities Live Well

For more than 25 years, D&S Community Services has helped people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), autism, and other special needs live as independently as possible and reach their personal goals.

Our caring team members work closely with each individual through all service planning to learn about their needs and what is important to them. We then create a plan of service just for them, with a unique mix of supports that may include residential services, day habilitation, nursing care, behavioral health services, and other supports, depending on their needs.

For one person, that may mean living with a dedicated caregiver in our host home program. Another person may need or want supports in their home or skill building in a day program. Wherever a person wants to go in life, we’re here to help them get there, each step of the way. As they build skills and their needs change, we’re here to help them set and reach new goals.

Group Homes

Our residential homes, also known as group homes, are warm, welcoming residences that can support people who need intensive 24-hour care as well as those who are able to live more independently. Services may include support with:

Daily living such as meals, housekeeping and personal care
Nursing care
Community activities
Transportation
Accessibility needs, such as wheelchair access

We offer several types of group homes including HCS, ICF-ID, Medical Residential, Supported Living, and Staffed Residences.

Host Homes

In our host homes, adults and children with disabilities live in private family homes with caregivers who support them. Adults become part of their caregiver’s family and get support including daily living skill development, transportation, and more. This warm and caring family environment builds long-lasting relationships that help people thrive. Services include:

24-hour home-based support
Community activities
Life skill building
Support with daily living activities such as meals and personal care
Transportation

Day Habilitation

Our Day Habilitation programs provide independent living skill building, social activities, and other supports to help adults build on their strengths, talents, and skills. Supports may include:

Social skill development and activities
Healthy meals
Exercise
Job training and coaching
Art and music
Community activities

In-Home Support

Our hourly services help those we serve live as independently as possible in the home of their choice. Caring staff provide support in the home, including:

Daily living support such as with meals, housekeeping and personal care
Medication administration
Community activities and outings
Transportation
Respite care

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect how a person communicates, interacts, or behaves.¹ It is often called Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) because everyone with autism is unique. There is a wide range of abilities, symptoms, and challenges, and everyone needs different types of support.² Symptoms may include:

Difficulty reading social cues
Challenges making friends
Repetitive behaviors.
Sensory sensitivities
Communication challenges
Delayed language or cognitive skills
Hyperactivity.³

Therapies such as Applied Behavior Therapy (ABA), occupational therapy, and early intervention services can help people with autism grow and reach their goals, from going to school to making friends to finding work they enjoy.

Intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are conditions that can affect a person’s development in many areas of life, including physical, intellectual, and emotional. They are usually present at birth. These conditions may affect how a person learns, behaves, and interacts with others, as well as developing independent living skills.¹ IDDs can affect many aspects of physical and cognitive development and may include:²

Cerebral palsy
Down syndrome
Fragile X syndrome
Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs)
Prader–Willi syndrome
Fetal alcohol syndrome
Sensory Processing Disorder
Language disorders
Degenerative disorders

Resources:

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities can have the same mental health challenges as people without disabilities. In fact, people with disabilities have a higher risk of mental health challenges like anxiety and depression.¹

Because they often have complex needs, people with disabilities may find that their mental health challenges are overlooked or misdiagnosed. Family or physicians may have a harder time understanding the challenges the person faces because they have other challenges such as with communication. People with disabilities may also have a harder time getting the services they need because of barriers such as physical, technological, or transportation.²

Lack of mental health care can cause challenges with our mental health to get worse over time.³ Therapies tailored to the unique needs of a person with a dual diagnosis can make all the difference and help them live a rich, full life in their community.
